Since the layers were physically molded, the silver layer was relatively thick. The Sheffield process remained in use until about 1840 when electroplating developed. Electroplating is a very efficient process which deposits a very thin layer of pure silver (typically 35 microns) onto a cheaper core metal (such as copper), as an electrical current passes through. The benefit of electroplating is that the surface is pure silver, not sterling silver. However, since the silver is deposited atom by atom, the external silver layer is very thin, greatly reducing the overall quantity of silver required, making it very economical.

Silverware manufactured from both sterling silver and silverplate contain varying amounts of pure silver. Recently, however, the term silverware has become a generic term referring to only the flatware and cutlery, not the base metal used to manufacture it. Today's most common varieties of 'silverware' are made of stainless steel, generally the 18/8 or 18/10 alloys. Other types of 'silverware' are produced from metals such as gold (solid and plated), brass, and pewter, all of which obviously contain no silver.
